to show the extent of the problem of toxic chemicals in toys and
provide guidance for parents wishing to purchase less toxic toys.

Parents and grandparents everywhere are wondering if their children’s toys are safe. Toy manufacturers recalled millions of toys this summer when they discovered high levels of lead in toys, including beloved favorites such as Thomas the Tank engine, Dora the Explorer, and Elmo. Researchers have also found dangerous levels of lead in children’s jewelry and vinyl (PVC) baby bibs and lunch boxes.
The Washington Toxics Coalition and the Toxic-Free Legacy Coalition hosted “Bring Your Kids’ Toys to Work Day” on Thursday, September 27th at the Capitol in Olympia, WA . We conducted this on-site investigation with a special tool, called an XRF Analyzer, which can detect toxic heavy metals like lead and cadmium as well as PVC (vinyl), the poison plastic.
