Senate Passes Toxic Toy Bill 40-9
Washington Now Has Strongest Protections on Lead and Other Chemicals in Toys
Olympia, WA— Children’s advocates cheered the Senate passage of ESHB
26467, the Children’s Safe Products Act on a vote of 40-9. The bill
previously passed the House 95-0. The bill contains some of the
toughest toy safety provisions in the nation.
“This is a great day for children’s health! Parents and children are
now one step closer to having safer toys and other products,” said Ivy
Sager-Rosenthal, environmental health advocate for the Washington
Toxics Coalition.
The
bill will eliminate three toxic chemicals, lead, cadmium, and
phthalates, from toys and other children’s products. It will also
require manufacturers to report whether their products contain other
chemicals found to be of a concern for children’s health. The bill now
goes back to the House for a concurrence vote.
